Mainapi Waterfall dropping through dense green forest in Netravali, South Goa

Netravali and South Goa's Waterfalls: Beyond Dudhsagar

By ·14 min read·

Netravali is the South Goa waterfall day I would choose over Dudhsagar, but only if you treat it as a forest visit rather than a place to swim. Savri and Mainapi sit inside the sanctuary, the drive from Margao is roughly 45 kilometres, and the official jeep package takes you to one waterfall according to choice and availability. That is already a full outing.

I write for Refuje from Himachal and do not live in Goa. This guide is built from current Goa government pages, a fresh reading of traveller discussions, live map checks and exact-place photographs. My editorial judgement is simple: choose Netravali for one day, or choose the Cotigao–Kuskem side for another. Trying to collect both halves of the interior before sunset turns a good forest day into a wet-road checklist.

Best first choice
Netravali: Savri or Mainapi, plus Budbudyachi Tali
Best season compromise
October and November; flow still varies with rainfall
Monsoon water rule (2026 order)
No swimming, bathing, diving, cliff-jumping or entering natural water bodies
Official jeep offer
Either Savri or Mainapi, subject to choice and availability
Advertised package
From ₹570 on the GFDC page; verify party minimum at booking
Margao estimate
About 45 km and 1.5 hours by road
Second-day cluster
Cotigao, Kuskem and Bamanbudo
Checked
17 August 2026

The waterfalls are open to look at, not to enter. A 60-day order issued on 29 June 2026 prohibits swimming, bathing, entering water, diving and cliff-jumping at waterfalls, rivers, lakes and similar natural sites. It was still in force when this guide was checked. Authorised GFDC and GTDC eco-tourism may continue with safety protocols, but rain can still change access. Recheck before leaving and follow forest staff on site.

The map makes the choice clearer

  1. MargaoPractical rail and road starting point for the Sanguem side
  2. Netravali Wildlife SanctuaryOfficial gateway for Savri and Mainapi
  3. Savri WaterfallShorter-timed waterfall option inside Netravali
  4. Mainapi WaterfallMore demanding waterfall option with an earlier on-foot cutoff
  5. Budbudyachi TaliTemple pond in Netravali village; not a swimming lake
  6. Salaulim DamPossible Sanguem-side scenic detour if current access and time allow
  7. Bamanbudo WaterfallSeasonal roadside cascade on the Canacona interior side
  8. Cotigao Wildlife SanctuaryForest trails and watchtowers south of Canacona
  9. Kuskem WaterfallSeasonal waterfall near the Cotigao side
  10. Cabo de Rama FortCoastal headland; save it for a coast day

Margao, Netravali and Salaulim form the Sanguem-side line. Cotigao, Kuskem and Bamanbudo sit farther south and east of the Canacona coast. Cabo de Rama is west on the Arabian Sea. A map can put ten pins on one screen; a rain-soaked road cannot make them one sensible itinerary.

That distance problem comes up repeatedly in traveller discussions. u/myspotmyy warned that South Goa is difficult without a scooter or car because points sit far apart. u/Western-Coat7002 added that long rides in rain become tiring much faster than short hops. If the rider is inexperienced, book a car. Refuje’s Goa transport guide covers the wider taxi, bus and rental trade-offs.

Savri or Mainapi? Pick one

The names cause avoidable confusion. “Netravali waterfall” is often used as shorthand, but the current Forest Corporation product distinguishes Savri and Mainapi. The jeep package covers either one according to choice and availability. A guide that quietly merges the two will give you the wrong trail, cutoff or effort.

After heavy rainFlow and footing still need a same-day checkStream crossings and the return need extra caution
What not to promiseA dip, low flow or family suitabilityAn exact distance, step count or empty trail

The published timing answers the first practical question: Mainapi demands an earlier start. It does not settle the exact walk. Recent traveller reports disagree on kilometres and steps, which is a good reason not to turn one person’s watch into a universal fact. Ask the gate what the route looks like that morning.

u/fieroar1 remembered the Mainapi descent as muddy and slippery, with laterite steps, butterflies and a snake crossing the path. u/niteeda added a less romantic detail: leeches. These are not reasons to avoid the forest. They are reasons to wear closed shoes with grip and to keep enough energy for the climb out.

Flow is even less dependable. u/NightjarOracle said Mainapi was slower in March, while u/TheManFromMoira suggested Bamanbudo might still have reduced flow. Other March reports said the falls were dry. None of them can guarantee the waterfall you will see. If the cascade is the only thing that would make the drive worthwhile, confirm current conditions before paying.

What the official Netravali booking actually says

The Goa Forest Development Corporation currently advertises a jeep safari to either waterfall from ₹570. Its breakdown is ₹400 for the jeep, ₹100 forest entry, ₹50 convenience fee and ₹20 GST. The same page says a minimum of three passengers in one section and four in its FAQ, with a maximum of six. That conflict is on the official page, so do not let a blog settle it by invention. Use the live booking form or the contact on the GFDC page.

The page lists a canteen, bathrooms and changing rooms. It also uses the phrase “refreshing dip.” When a district water-entry order is in force, it overrides that wording. Bring food and water as sensible backup, but do not carry swimwear as a plan.

The Forest Corporation’s own visitor code is better guidance than a generic trek list: check entry time with staff, stay on the trail, keep noise down, use bins, avoid flash around wildlife, do not feed animals and do not step off-track. u/gigglypuff2023 gave similar advice to two women planning Netravali: follow the Forest Department’s instructions at entry.

A Netravali day that fits the clock

  1. Early: reach the gate with one waterfall chosen
Leave the coast early enough to absorb rain and road delays. Confirm Savri or Mainapi, the day's access, the return cutoff and what the advertised package covers before starting.
  2. Midday: finish the forest visit without adding a second trek
Eat at the canteen if it is operating, carry backup water and snacks, and leave enough daylight for the road. Do not enter the pool or an unapproved stream crossing.
  3. Afternoon: Budbudyachi Tali, then decide on Salaulim
Visit the temple pond quietly. Add Salaulim only if the weather, current opening information and daylight are all comfortable; otherwise return toward Margao.

You my friend described 4 days worth of activities if not 5. If you are the kind of person who likes to "cover" all the places, you can probably do it. But the planning and time constraints take the fun out of it. The road towards butterfly point is very rough you need to hike the trail. Also, you should try to return back during daylight!

That reply was written under a two-day plan that tried to combine Benaulim, Cabo de Rama, Butterfly Beach, nightlife, Netravali and Salaulim. The useful lesson is not a universal number of days. It is that the interior does not shrink because your hotel is on a beach.

Budbudyachi Tali is a temple pond, not a swimming stop

Budbudyachi Tali is a temple pond, not a swimming lake; bubbles rise from its bed beside Gopinath Temple. Photo: NICOLE CUNCOLIM via Wikimedia Commons, CC0.

Budbudyachi Tali sits beside Gopinath Temple in Netravali village. Granite steps run down to a small pond with a stone pedestal, and bubbles rise from points on the bed. Goa Tourism says they seem to respond when people clap. It also says the cause remains unresolved.

That wording matters. Carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, methane, acoustics and divine explanations all appear online, but no current primary source settles the mechanism. Watch the water without upgrading a theory into science. The site is religious as well as curious, so keep voices down, dress for a temple precinct and do not treat the pond as a prop.

The published Goa Tourism page lists 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., but tourism-page hours age. Check locally, especially around a festival, weather event or public order. u/Secret_traveller grouped the forest, bubbling lake and nearby dams into one inland outing and warned that Savri could be in harsh flow. That is better planning than reading each pin as a separate promise.

Salaulim is the optional detour

Salaulim Dam works on the Netravali side of the map, not as a reason to rush the waterfall. Use it only if current visitor access is confirmed and the sky, road and daylight look comfortable. A district no-entry-into-water order, when in force, also covers the dam and reservoir. Stay in the designated visitor area.

If the trek runs long, skip it. The same rule applies to Cabo de Rama. A fort sunset after a wet forest trek looks efficient on a map and feels very different after the drive back west. Save the fort for the coast, with the quiet South Goa beaches, rather than turning Netravali into a race.

The other interior: Cotigao, Kuskem and Bamanbudo

A broad green meadow below forested hills in the interior of Cotigao, South Goa
Cotigao's forest edges open into meadows as well as dense woodland. Go for the habitat, short trails and watchtowers, not a checklist of guaranteed wildlife sightings. Photo: Vikram2784 via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.

Cotigao is the quieter Canacona-side alternative. Go for tall forest, bird calls, short nature trails and watchtowers, not for a guaranteed leopard, gaur or sloth bear. A current Maps reviewer put the expectation neatly: a sanctuary is protected habitat, not a zoo. That is a better reason to visit than a wildlife checklist.

Goa Tourism’s Cotigao page lists eight trails from 500 metres to 5 kilometres and daily hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It also lists a ₹5 entry fee that is clearly stale; recent reports put the adult ticket much higher. The honest answer is to confirm both the gate time and fee rather than repeat the old number.

u/Greedy-Guidance2131 objected to posting every location for crowds to follow, while u/Western-Coat7002 complained that Cabo de Rama has already become busier after social-media exposure. The answer is not secrecy theatre. It is to share the official gate, explain the rules, avoid coordinates for unapproved paths and leave small villages cleaner and quieter than you found them.

Kuskem is seasonal and belongs with Cotigao

Kuskem is a seasonal forest waterfall in the Cotigao side of South Goa; verify access locally after heavy rain. Photo: Paul778899 via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.

Kuskem is a monsoon waterfall on the Cotigao side. The available place data and local context put it near the sanctuary; some tourism pages wrongly place it in the distant Mhadei reserve. Verify the route at Cotigao, use an approved path and turn back if staff or rain closes it.

This is not a substitute for a swim. It is a forest viewpoint whose flow may disappear outside the wet and immediate post-wet months. A trail can also be unavailable precisely when the waterfall looks strongest.

Bamanbudo is easier to reach, not risk-free

Seasonal Bamanbudo Waterfall in heavy flow with visitors standing beside and in the water
An older photograph shows visitors in the water at Bamanbudo. That is not permission: the 60-day monsoon order issued on 29 June 2026 for South Goa and Kushavati districts prohibited entering natural water bodies, and conditions can change after rain. Photo: Paul778899 via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.

Bamanbudo is the roadside cascade in this group, which makes it easier than a sanctuary trek and more tempting as an impulsive stop. Pull fully off the road where parking is permitted, do not block local traffic, and stay out of the water whenever a district order prohibits entry, as one did for 60 days from late June 2026. The older photograph above records what visitors once did; it does not describe what is legal or safe today.

u/sd4483 found that even a planned trip can shrink to five or six useful hours a day in persistent rain. Use that as the day’s capacity, not as an invitation to accelerate between wet stops.

When to go for flow without pretending it is guaranteed

PeriodWhat it is good forWhat can go wrong
June–SeptemberHighest chance of strong seasonal flow and saturated green forestWater-entry bans, closures, stream crossings, leeches, slippery steps and reduced daylight
October–NovemberThe best editorial compromise: recent rain, calmer access and greener countryFlow still varies; an early dry spell can change the picture
December–MarchCooler forest walks and the official broader Netravali seasonSeasonal falls can weaken sharply or dry
April–MayOnly a forest or village visit with a confirmed reasonHeat, humidity and poor waterfall odds

GFDC recommends October through March for the sanctuary overall. That is a forest-season answer, not a waterfall guarantee. Monsoon gives the strongest drama and the greatest chance that staff will change the plan. October and November are our compromise because they usually retain recent rain without asking visitors to treat a swollen stream as entertainment.

If water safety is the main question, use Refuje’s separate Goa waterfall and plunge-pool guide. If you want a North Goa forest day, the wild North Goa guide covers a different geography and should not be folded into this route.

What to carry, and what to leave behind

  • Closed shoes with grip, plus dry socks and a small towel.
  • Drinking water, a simple meal backup and cash, without assuming the canteen or payment network will solve everything.
  • A light rain shell, dry bag for electronics and any medicine you need.
  • Insect repellent and a plan for leeches that does not involve salt or chemicals on the forest floor.
  • A charged phone with the route saved offline; some forest stretches have weak or no signal.
  • Enough daylight and energy to return. The waterfall is the midpoint, not the finish.

Leave speakers, alcohol, disposable picnic clutter, flip-flops and the urge to improvise a “secret” path. Do not bring a drone without confirmed permission. Wildlife does not owe you a sighting, and villagers do not owe you a shortcut.

If you want help choosing Savri, Mainapi or a Cotigao-side day, send Refuje your dates, base, group, mobility and transport plan. We can help shape a realistic day without promising current access or waterfall flow.

Common questions

Is Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary open in the monsoon?

Authorised eco-tourism may continue, but rain and official orders can change access. The current GFDC page advertises Savri and Mainapi visits. Check the booking page or forest staff on the day rather than treating an old review as confirmation.

Can I swim at Savri, Mainapi, Kuskem or Bamanbudo?

Not while a district order prohibiting water entry is in force, as one was for 60 days from late June 2026. Check the rules for your dates. It prohibits swimming, bathing, entering water, diving and cliff-jumping at waterfalls and other natural water bodies. A visit may be allowed even when water entry is not.

Which is easier, Savri or Mainapi waterfall?

Savri is the easier first choice. Mainapi is the longer, steeper outing and has an earlier official on-foot cutoff of 2:00 p.m. Ask the gate about that day's trail and return conditions.

What does the Netravali jeep safari cost?

GFDC currently advertises the package from ₹570, with a breakdown for jeep, forest entry, convenience fee and GST. Its page conflicts over whether the minimum group is three or four passengers, so verify the live checkout terms before travelling.

When is the best time to see South Goa's waterfalls?

October and November are the best compromise for recent rain and more manageable access. June through September usually brings stronger flow but also the greatest safety restrictions and closure risk. Flow is never guaranteed.

What causes the bubbles at Budbudyachi Tali?

Goa Tourism says several explanations exist but the exact cause remains unresolved. Treat it as a sacred temple pond and an observation stop, not a swimming lake or a settled science demonstration.

Can I visit Netravali and Cotigao in one day?

Do not plan on it. Netravali with one waterfall and Budbudyachi Tali is already a full day from the coast. Cotigao, Kuskem and Bamanbudo make a separate Canacona-side day.

Do I need a guide for Mainapi or Kuskem?

Use the official gate, authorised route and whatever guide or jeep arrangement forest staff require that day. Do not follow an unmarked social-media pin into protected forest, especially during or after heavy rain.

Sources and method

This guide was checked on 17 August 2026. It separates official rules and published times from traveller reports, and it does not claim a personal visit.

If strong seasonal water is the only reason for your Goa trip, read the worst time to visit Goa before booking. Netravali is worth the day because the forest, village and pond survive an imperfect waterfall. The cascade should not have to carry the whole journey.
