Block Printing Workshop in Udaipur – Hand-Print Fabric with Traditional Artisans
The experience
What to expect
In the villages of Rajasthan, patterns aren't made by machines. They're stamped by hand, one wooden block at a time.
At Soulshala, our block printing workshop is led by an artisan family who have been practising this craft since childhood in Udaipur serving royal families this art since many generations. The hand-carved wooden blocks they use carry designs inspired by flowers, birds and village life, many of them passed down through the family.
Your session begins with an introduction to the wooden blocks and the stories behind each motif. You'll learn how the colours are prepared and how to load the block with the right amount of dye. Then you practise on paper before moving on to fabric, where you design and print your own piece with the artisan guiding your hand and rhythm.
No artistic skill is needed. It's calm, creative and surprisingly addictive, a perfect activity for travellers, couples, families and groups.
Once you're done, your fabric is dried, set and packed for you to take home as a souvenir.
