Day Hikes Around Kalpa: Three Walks, Three Kinds of Day (Kinnaur 2026)

By ·11 min read·

There is a comment on the big Kalpa thread that I think about a lot. Someone had posted yet another stack of Kinner Kailash photos, and a reader cut in: if youre just gonna brag about the view, give us a legit trail guide (r/HimachalPradesh). Fair. So here is the trail guide, from someone who lives on this side of Kinnaur.

Most people treat Kalpa as a one-night photo stop on the way to Sangla and Chitkul. That is a waste. From Kalpa you can walk out the door onto three completely different day hikes, none of them hard, each one a different kind of day. You do not need to be a trekker. You need a morning and decent shoes.

Where
Kalpa, above Reckong Peo, Kinnaur
The three hikes
Roghi (Dalhousie Rest House), Chakha Meadow, Kashang Valley
Easiest
Roghi to the old Dalhousie Rest House, gentle, about 5 hours
Best view
Chakha Meadow, where Kinner Kailash fills the frame
Most remote
Kashang Valley, a long day toward the back of Kinnaur
The peak
Kinner Kailash (locally Kinner, not Kinnaur)
Best months
April to June and September to October; avoid the monsoon

Quick answer. Base in Kalpa and do one walk a day. Start gentle with the Roghi and Dalhousie Rest House loop, take Chakha Meadow for the Kinner Kailash view, and save the long Kashang Valley day for when your legs are ready. All three are day hikes, no camping, sleep back in Kalpa. None needs the permit or the fitness of the big Kinner Kailash pilgrimage.

First, what these are not

One thing to clear up, because it stops people booking the wrong thing. None of these is the Kinner Kailash parikrama, the hard multi-day pilgrimage to the rotating Shivling at over 6,000 metres. That one is a serious uphill grind; a trekker on the sub warned a beginner off it flatly, dont do it if youre a first time trekker, this whole trek is uphill and not that gradual (r/HimachalPradesh). The three walks below are the opposite of that. They are day hikes you do on a normal holiday, and you are back in your Kalpa bed by evening.

1. Roghi and the Dalhousie Rest House, the gentle one

Start here, especially on your first day, while your lungs get used to 2,900 metres. The walk runs along the cliff road to Roghi, the orchard village about eight kilometres from Kalpa, and on to an old forest rest house.

Quick name check, because it confuses everyone: this has nothing to do with Dalhousie the hill station in Chamba, three hundred kilometres west. The Dalhousie Rest House here is a red-roofed forest bungalow near Roghi, more than 170 years old, from the era of Governor-General Dalhousie. It is a gentle, pretty walk through apple country with the Sutlej gorge dropping away beside you, and it doubles as your acclimatising day. Roghi itself is the quiet that people come to Kinnaur for. As one traveller noted after the Sangla circuit, Sangla and Chitkul were crowded, Kalpa, Roghi and Peo werent (r/HimachalPradesh). If you want the route walked with you, Refuje runs it as the Dalhousie Rest House day hike.

2. Chakha Meadow, the one for the view

If you only have time for one, make it this. Chakha is one of a chain of high meadows above Kalpa, and the reason to go is simple: this is where Kinner Kailash stops being a distant postcard and fills your whole field of view. A glacial stream runs through the grass, the air smells of deodar, and on a clear morning the wall of the range is right there in front of you. It is a moderate half-day, a few hours up and back, walkable by anyone reasonably fit.

It is also the kind of place the comment-section keeps asking for. People come to Kalpa for the mountain view, the best one in Himachal by more than a few accounts, the mountain view from Reckong Peo and Kalpa is my favorite in Himachal (r/HimachalPradesh), and Chakha is how you walk into it instead of photographing it from a balcony. Refuje runs it as the Chakha Meadow day hike.

3. Kashang Valley, the long, quiet one

This is the one I would send you on if you have the legs and the day, because it is the closest of the three to my own ground. The Kashang trail climbs from near Telangi, the hamlet I run our walks out of, up into one of the least-visited valleys in Kinnaur, toward the remote Pangi villages at the back. The gorge is raw, the pine ridges are steep, the stream is loud, and you will likely have it to yourselves.

It is a full day, around eight hours, moderate but long, so it is the one to do once you have a couple of the easier walks in your legs. The Refuje version stops for a Kinnauri lunch at a viewpoint and a tasting of the local apple and plum fruit wines, which is the part flatlanders remember. It is the Kashang Valley day hike. And it is exactly the sort of off-road corner the locals mean when they say most visitors never see the real Kinnaur, try the other villages and their kande too, muling, bhabha, meeru, yulla; majority of people havent seen 5% of kinnaur (r/HimachalPradesh).

Chakha or Kashang, if you can only pick one

Most people choose between these two. The gentle Roghi walk is a warm-up; the real decision is the view versus the wild.

Do them in order of effort. A gentle Roghi day to acclimatise, then Chakha for the view, then Kashang when your legs are ready. Not sure which fits your group? Tell us your dates and fitness and we will match you to the right walk and a resident guide.

Why these stay quiet, and how to keep them that way

The reason these meadows are still worth walking is that they have not been loved to death yet. The thing that protects them is undramatic: no camping. A trekker writing about Yulla Kanda, another of the Kinnaur meadow walks, put it exactly right, that it stays peaceful, not too much people because of camping which is not allowed there, otherwise this place will be ruined like others (r/IncredibleIndia). Same logic here. You walk up, you take it in, you walk down and sleep in Kalpa.

So treat them gently. Carry your rubbish out, stay on the path through the orchards and the grazing meadows, and remember these are working valleys, not a backdrop. We wrote the long version of that in our guide to travelling Himachal without wrecking it. The day hikes pair naturally with a slow evening too; our apple-orchard Sundowner and Slow Brunch are built for the hours when you are not walking.

When to come, and how to reach Kalpa

Walk these in the dry, clear stretches: April to June, when the meadows green up, and September to October, when the post-monsoon air is sharpest. Avoid July and August; as the Yulla Kanda trekker said of the season, its risky in monsoon, avoid travelling in monsoon (r/IncredibleIndia), and the same goes for all of these. Winter is beautiful but cold and the higher meadows hold snow; one visitor who went over the new year still loved it, no snowfall but very beautiful, light rain and snowfall is not a big issue (r/HimachalPradesh), so it is doable if you are equipped.

You reach Kalpa up the NH-5 from Shimla, turning into Kinnaur near Sarahan and on to Reckong Peo, the district town; Kalpa is the short climb above Peo. Base there for two or three nights and the hikes come to you. The full Kinnaur picture, with permits and the wider route, is in our Kinnaur valley guide; for the quieter Parvati side, there is Pulga.

  2. Day 2: Chakha Meadow
Up to the meadow for the Kinner Kailash view, back by afternoon, an easy evening in the orchards
  3. Day 3: Kashang Valley
The long day toward the back of Kinnaur via Telangi, a Kinnauri lunch and the fruit-wine tasting, down by evening

Want all three handled with a resident guide and a stay facing the range? Email us your dates and we will set up the walks in the right order and a bed in Kalpa.

Kalpa is not a photo stop. It is a base. Give it three mornings, one walk each, and you will have seen more of the real Kinnaur than the people who drove straight through to Chitkul and back.

FAQ

What day hikes can you do from Kalpa?

Three, all starting from Kalpa or just above Reckong Peo: the gentle Roghi and Dalhousie Rest House walk, the Chakha Meadow hike for the Kinner Kailash view, and the longer Kashang Valley day toward the back of Kinnaur. None requires camping; you sleep in Kalpa.

Is the Dalhousie Rest House hike in Dalhousie?

No, and this confuses everyone. It is not Dalhousie the hill station in Chamba. The Dalhousie Rest House here is a 170-year-old forest bungalow near Roghi village, about 8 km from Kalpa, from the era of Governor-General Dalhousie.

Which Kalpa day hike has the best Kinner Kailash view?

Chakha Meadow. It is one of the few trails where the range fills your whole view rather than sitting as a distant silhouette. It is a moderate half-day and the one to pick if you only have time for one.

How hard are these hikes? Are they good for beginners?

They are day hikes, not expeditions. Roghi is easy, Chakha is a moderate half-day, and Kashang is moderate but long at about 8 hours. None is the hard multi-day Kinner Kailash pilgrimage. Acclimatise a day in Kalpa first.

Do you need a permit?

These day hikes around Kalpa do not need the inner-line permit that the deeper Kinnaur-Spiti border areas require. Indian citizens are fine; foreign nationals should check current rules for anything beyond Reckong Peo. Confirm locally before you go.

When is the best time to do them?

April to June and September to October, when the trails are dry and the air is clear. Avoid the July to August monsoon, when the paths are risky. Winter is doable if you are equipped for cold and possible snow on the higher meadows.

How do you get to Kalpa?

Up the NH-5 from Shimla, turning into Kinnaur near Sarahan and on to Reckong Peo, the district town. Kalpa is the short climb above Peo. Base there for two or three nights.

Is a guide worth it for these?

For Kashang especially, yes; it is long, remote and the trail is faint in places, and a resident guide knows the water and the way. For Roghi and Chakha a guide adds the local stories and takes the navigation off your plate.

Written from Kinnaur. I am from the Reckong Peo and Kalpa side, and Refuje runs these three walks, the Kashang one out of Telangi; the Reddit voices above are linked at each mention. Distances, the Dalhousie Rest House history and the season were checked in June 2026; trail conditions change, so reconfirm before you go.
