How to get your licence

Where to get one

From the District Fisheries Officer (DFO) office, the Fisheries Sub-Inspector at the beat, or designated Angler Lodges. A licence is mandatory for all angling in HP's designated waters.

What it costs

₹300 per rod as a minimum. Mahseer and reservoir waters such as Pong Dam (a Ramsar site and Wildlife Sanctuary) may carry additional clearances — confirm with the local DFO before you travel.

Check the season first

Trout waters close 1 November to the last day of February. Mahseer breeding closures (roughly May–August) are gazetted annually — fishing during them is a cognizable, non-bailable offence.

How HP classifies its waters

The rules depend on which kind of water you are on. Cold trout waters are the most tightly protected; warmer general waters allow a wider range of species and gear.
