Home to the thousand-year-old monastery
Tabo is a small town on the banks of the Spiti river in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, at around 3,280 m. It is built around the Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE — the oldest continuously operating Buddhist enclave in India and the Himalayas, often called the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’ for its ancient murals and stucco statues.
